It was planned in 1241, started in 1246 and quickly completed: it was consecrated on April 26, 1248. The patron was the very devout Louis IX of France, who constructed it as a chapel for the royal palace. The palace itself has otherwise utterly disappeared, leaving the Sainte-Chapelle all but surrounded by the Palais de Justice, which carries on a single function of the palace, which was the site of the king’s lit de justice where important aristocrats pled their cases before the king.

The living structures, some of which stretch over one hundred feet in length, are sturdy enough to support the weight of more than 50 people. Beyond their utilitarian function, enabling natives to cross distant ridges, the bridges are essentially the roots of a type of rubber tree called ficus elastica. Left unfettered, the roots expand in more unwieldy pattern (hint: they’re definitely not being so accommodating out of their own free will). But at some point roughly 500 years ago, indigenous tribespeople discovered that they could guide the formation of this outgrowth using betel nut trunks as tools. Once the roots reach the opposite bank, they form a stable foundation from which to they continue to grow and strengthen.

An aurora is a natural light display in the sky particularly in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions, caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere (thermosphere). The charged particles originate in the magnetosphere and solar wind and, on Earth, are directed by the Earth’s magnetic field into the atmosphere. Aurora is classified as diffuse or discrete aurora. Most aurorae occur in a band known as the auroral zone which is typically 3° to 6° in latitudinal extent and at all local times or longitudes. The auroral zone is typically 10° to 20° from the magnetic pole defined by the axis of the Earth’s magnetic dipole.
